Maverick in Winter: A Fading McCain Takes Final Swipes at Trump. [VIDEO]

I haven’t seen any news indicating that Sen. John McCain is near death. And, at this time, perhaps he is not. But recent comments and a flurry of activity give me a clue that McCain’s brain cancer may finally be winning the final battle.

For example, his memoir, The Restless Wave, will be released later this month. McCain himself read this excerpt, which seems to be his goodbye to his fellow Americans.

Then there are the whispers that leaked about McCain’s eventual funeral, an event that will take place at Washington’s National Cathedral. Plans are to include Vice President Mike Pence, while Barack Obama and George W. Bush will provide eulogies.

However, there is no invite for President Trump. That’s awkward, although McCain probably never forgave Trump for saying that he was no ‘war hero’ during the primaries.

Moreover, McCain takes swipes at Trump in his memoirs, writing:

“The appearance of toughness or a reality show facsimile of toughness seems to matter more than any of our values. Flattery secures his friendship, criticism his enmity.”

Yeah, there’s no love lost there at all.

Then there are the visitors and callers to McCain’s home in Arizona who are decidedly not fans of the President, like visitors Sen. Jeff Flake and McCain’s best bud Sen. Lindsey Graham; and George W. Bush, who has called. Finally Joe Biden, a longtime friend of the McCain family — whose son Beau also succumbed to the same brain cancer — visited a week ago. McCain then advised Biden to ‘not walk away’ from politics, although Biden is cagey about announcing a run against Trump in 2020. It may be that McCain is determined to get back at Trump, even from beyond the grave.

McCain has also been dishing on Sarah Palin, whom he regrets naming as his Vice Presidential running mate in 2008. Instead, he wrote that wished that he had picked former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), although his advisers advised against Lieberman, who supported abortion rights. In the end, writes McCain, he wishes he ignored that advice. However, to his credit, he still defends her performance as a candidate. I haven’t heard the former Alaskan governor make any comment.

I know many of our readers despise John McCain, and while I voted for him in the 2008 presidential election, I must concur that he’s been a disappointment to me, too. And for all his high-minded words about the nation coming together, his vote against dismantling Obamacare was hardly an olive branch to his nemesis Donald Trump. In fact, I believe McCain set out to be the turd in Trump’s punch bowl.

However, the man is dying. And his cancer, glioblastoma, is brutal. I can’t remember where I read this, but I recall a neurologist comparing it to pouring motor oil over a bowl of Jello and watching it infiltrate. “Now,” said the neurologist, “try to get all the oil out.”

Furthermore, my husband’s uncle recently died of glioblastoma, and he didn’t live long after his diagnosis. It is a truly terrible disease. And I hope that, despite all the rancor and bitterness McCain has shown his political foes, his passing is peaceful, and that his loved ones will find solace in his memory as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
